The richly illustrated lecture uses the two subject areas mentioned as examples to show how the current state of knowledge has developed since antiquity. Many historical and, from today's perspective, curious theoretical models and attempts to explain the observations made are presented, which later turned out to be incorrect. Only relatively modern findings and methods finally led to today's explanatory models. For the question of the age of the earth, this was above all the discovery of radioactivity with its consequences for the earth's heat balance and its possibilities for determining age. And the question of the Earth's internal structure could only be clarified once seismic investigation techniques had been developed.
