Jüdischer Friedhof Niederzissen
Niederzissen
The 87 tombstones for 94 deceased face east, towards Jerusalem. Five gravestones were placed with their faces facing west. Two memorial stones for murdered family members also face westward. Samson Kahn's grave stele also has a memorial plaque. The Kahn couple's grave stele also had a memorial plate that fell out of the stone in the 1970s. The inscriptions on the old basalt, tuff and artificial stones are almost all written in Hebrew script and are partly weathered. So it was very difficult to grasp their content. Only with the help of digital recordings and their processing on the computer was it possible to produce usable image material. Gerd Friedt made a name for himself as a translator of Hebrew writings. When Brunhilde Stuermer from Niederzissen viewed the birth, marriage and death certificates of the former members of the synagogue community in the registry office of the Brohltal community and in the state main archive in Koblenz, Gerd Friedt was able to assign the inscriptions to the relevant people in 2006.
